Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? by Seth Godin

Why read Linchpin

Linchpin by Seth Godin is a must read for those ready to escape the 9-5.

Scratch that Linchpin is for anyone whose willing to hear out a case of why and what you can do to escape the 9-5 grind,

My plight and reasons I criticize nurses and truck drivers

If your job requires you to follow instructions, and do what you are told you are not a linchpin.

A linchpin cannot be replaced by a cog in the machine can easily be replaced.

If someone can come in and work for less and take your job title and responsibilities on your are replaceable.

The same can be said about teachers

I will argue that if you are willing to continue your education, in relevant fields:

  1. pertaining to the social psychology and economics of the community you are in then you deserve to be paid more.

If you can turn around and truly transform bad kids into productive, lucrative and transformative , members of society, then you deserve to be paid more.

If you’re mad that you students,  brag about their parents making more money than you.

With less education than you, so now  you want more money.

Then you don’t deserve to get paid more.

Nor do you deserve to be a teacher.

Your simply made you followed the wrong  blueprint.

You are replaceable, kids can learn more on the internet and through books, than what you are willing and capable of teaching.

Without a deeper understanding of human psychology, you will never be able to master a large or small class room for that matter, and you are replaceable.

How to become a Linchpin

So what can you do to stand out.

Every field in the next few years will be rendered crippled by the increase in minimum wage, and the poor state of our society.

So how can you become remarkable, and irreplaceable?

You have to become a thought leader, no matter if you are a teacher, bus driver janitor, whatever you job occupation I can guarantee on thing.

I bet you log on to social media and prop yourself up as if you are the big dog on campus.

And make your life grander than what it really is,

But on the flip side.

I bet you don’t put in the work or effort required to actually maintain that lifestyle.

And of course you don’t.

But the point of this post is not to down grade or play anyone, the point of this post is to give you the tools to better yourself.

Trust me.

I had to go from being homeless to being a self made entrepreneur,.

And it was not an easy process,.

But I do believe I streamlined the methodology required to do so,.

Which means it should be effortless and less pitfalls for the people.

People who will in turn benefit from me putting out content.

I hope to create a paradigm shift, in the way we think.

The Assembly line

The western world perfected factories during the industrial revolution.

so much so that we modeled schools, prisons, the military and governments after the factory model.

Bells and whistles, go off you move from one location to another location based of the time the bells and whistles go off.

You are given a set hierarchical placement, and instructions to follow.

You are a slave.

You can learn to game the system.

But you will always be replaceable and never be free.

If you make mistakes by trusting the wrong people with your 401k you will retire only to find out that you got screwed.

Or worst yet you probably don’t even see a future in which you can retire and truly not have to work.

Ford Pioneered the assembly line.

And history shows,  that his mark on our nation was permanent.

For example countless streets and things named after him and his endeavors.

Not only in Detroit, but any where his factories are.

For example, in Chicago we have Ford city, a Ford City mall and Ford Heights.

All areas that are now decaying.

Were once filled with people who worked for him.

Now about this assembly line

The purpose of an assembly line is to remove the linchpins.

And instead place replaceable and removable cogs or people in those positions.

For example, its faster to pay more people less money, and cheaper to mass produce cars.

If you scale down a persons role.

So what you get is someone who instead of building a whole car and taking days to do it.

Is one person screwing in one thing, and sliding the car down the line.

Sure, the assembly line has its benefits.

for example, you can pretty much determine what department or person is responsible for any recalls.

But at the same time, you can limit what you have to pay a person.

No matter how much expertise they have, or experience.

They are replaceable because of the simple fact that you have diminished their role.

This is deeper than the factory

It can be seen across all industries.

Which, leaves us with a bunch of incompetent people, running organizations, like the post office, the DMV.

And other important institutions and infrastructures around us.

Most teachers aren’t bad teachers, but a large majority of people become teachers to acquire tenure, and what they consider an easy pay check.

Most government employees aren’t lazy.

But a moody and upset DMV worker, can greatly hinder the speed of getting a new city sticker.

Based off the mood they are in.

In both instances they can say its not me its the system.

Linchpins will ALWAYS find work

Whether you choose to work for a company or work for yourself.

You will become revered and marveled at, when you are the linchpin.

You will also garner hate as well, but you will be irreplaceable, and more employable than your peers.

Word of mouth is everything.

A nurse who goes for an interview, and leaves, feeling like she didn’t get the job.

Maybe surprised to learn she actually did get the job.

What she didn’t see is the receptionist talking to her boss.

Tell her about how she went to school with you and worked with you at a previous facility.

And how much of a dedicated and hard worker you are.

That will have more of an impact on you getting employed.

It saves  the interviewer from weighing your degree against another candidates degree.

People watch, you may of never saw this receptionist a day in your life.

But she has seen you around and admired your work ethic.

How you do anything is how you do everything

You may of heard how you do anything is how you do everything before, its pretty self explanatory.

I will argue the same amount of time you spend at work..

You at least need to spend the same amount of time or at the very least half that amount of time doing something your passionate about.

Pursuing a hobby, and learning how to turn it into a business.

even if you can only spend an hour a week doing so.

It  still puts you 52 hours ahead of someone sitting on the couch at the end of the year.

Your Lizard Brain is your enemy

The lizard brain is the portion of our brain the evolved first and is the oldest portion.

It holds all our primal fears and uses them against us.

From its point of view uses them to keep us safe.

The lizard brain would go off when you were hungry, and it would go off when you were in danger.

Now a days however. If we perceive chasing our dreams as dangerous, your brain will become your own personal prison, and hold you captive.

Its natural to want to fit in, but in order to be remarkable you must standout.

Linchpins don’t all have inherent talent

We have an affinity to give people herculean myths, and survivor ship stories.

Only they can be the Linchpin, I simply can not .

Which Simply means, only that person can be Lebron James, or Steve Jobs or Whatever celebrity.

In Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers .

He outlines, what give people the advantage, and what subtracts, and negates peoples ability to get ahead.

One thing is for certain, and that is the effort and hard work will beat talent.

The Value of the Emotional gift and Emotional engagement

The ability to pour your emotions into your work will make you a linchpin. It will take your talents, and skill set to the next level.

A step above that however, is your abilities to pour yourself into and grow others.

For me this has been what has made me a great personal trainer, its not having  12 certifications, from multiple personal training programs.

It have been my ability to bring out the best in my clients, and the to do the same for the employees I’ve led.

I  have literally, took on clients helped them lose weight or gain muscle.

And then, I have turned around and helped them become personal trainers themselves.

And its not because the money is great, its because of the transfer of positive emotional energy, That I was able to pass to them.

If you can and are willing to pass this type of energy on to others, you will be immensely rewarded.

I can’t say I didn’t have bad apples, in the bunch, but they  do not outweigh the good I did, or the good others have done.

The Artist is always producing

Gucci mane just put out his 101st album, he doesn’t have one or two songs out or just one or two albums out.

Picasso has 1000’s of paintings, he doesn’t have just one.

The artist no matter if you like their work or not, will always be producing and putting out content.

Their lizard brain doesn’t surpass their ability to create.

Everyone else is working on a script, a song , book, or some million dollar idea, but their lizard brain tells them to procrastinate.

You must defeat your lizard brain, in order to become a linchpin.

its notable to mention that Gucci mane credits Outliers. As being a pivotal book, he read during his last jail stint.
