Why read Poke the box
Poke the box is wrote for those of use who have a fear of :
Failure
Getting started
Success
The reason I say there is a fear of failure, is because people are scared to poke the box.
The reason I say their is a fear of getting started is because, people fear what comes after getting started. So they don’t poke the box.
You can measure what you will lose, but you can’t measure the emotions, and true rewards of what you’ll gain.
Success can turn good men and women in to demons, so you won’t poke the box so that you can continue to live your humble life.
The willingness to adapt
The economy is changing, every day jobs are dying. New industries are being born. You have to be willing to learn new skill sets to get a head and survive.
Poking the box, is essential to success, the name of the book, is derived from a toy Seth’s Uncle made for his cousin which was a boxd, with buttons and lights on it.
Obviously I am not a fan of this book, as much as I am a fan of Seth Godin. Book for Book he has more titles I like than lets say Ryan Holiday.
But Ryan doesn’t have as many books as Seth so only time will tell Ryan at least has a solid 6 books I like, and poke the box, is not really a must read for me.
But Keep in mind The Icarus Deception came right after this book, and Linchpin was prior to this book.
Sp Poke the box is a nice bridge between the two. Otherwise you might explode from thinking to many innovative thoughts at one time.
Honestly this book is not my favorite by any means, and is not even in my to 8 for Seth Godin.
The main take away from this book is to fly right in the middle, don’t procrastinate, and don’t over start.
If this is your first Seth Godin book I would have to rank my top 5 as follows:
